Iker Ortiz joins industrial designer Ricardo Casas in this collaboration for Shelf, in which a series of jewelry pieces are created as a result of the unlikely encounter of the past with the future. Design and production from the latest 3D printing technology and at the same time, irreplaceable hand-craftsmanship from the experienced goldsmith.

First, the concept is materialized in a three-dimensional model using a software program that will later send it to the printer. The designers developed the series beginning with a rectangular volume as the base, which would then undergo different interventions to create all the variants.

A cylinder is substracted from the volume to produce the cavity corresponding to the finger or wrist, to continue molding it afterwards with each piece’s specific shape until the final image is achieved. Lastly, a deduction to the still smooth and solid object is made when it is traversed from top to bottom by a geometric pattern, providing transparency and originating depth effects inside of it.

The finished model lands ultimately in the 3D printer, launching an additive layer manufacturing process employing liquid resin that later solidifies with ultraviolet light. Produced at our workshop, these rough pieces go subsequently through a meticulous process where they are, by hand, sanded and polished to perfection until their definitive look is accomplished.

In a second edition, the idea was enhanced by introducing metal in the cavities using steel and gold-coated brass. Apart from raising their value, the contrast of materials is emphasized in a play of light and shadows with stunning results.

Experimenting with the application of new technology in the jewelry industry, this collaboration delivers an innovative collection that revolutionizes and marvels. It awakes a fascination for the future of creation that triggers exciting thoughts, without overlooking the indispensable experience inherited over generations that makes a jewel, an inherently human reflection and an art form.

3D PRINTED SERIES was presented by Shelf during ZONA MACO Art Fair, 2016 Edition.
